The A-Team was one of my favourite television series back in the 80’s when I was a kid and I now know it has been turned into a Hollywood film. I’m extremely excited as I love cheesy movies. The thought of the A-Team movie got me all nostalgic and I could not get the theme tune out of my head while I was trying to work – I bet you are doing it right now.
This completely side tracked me and I started thinking about what would be the perfect A-Team for SEO. Now I don’t mean this in terms of the SEO industries big top guns like, Matt Cutts, Rand Fishkin, Aaron Wall, and Michael Gray. In that instance I wonder who would play what part? The thought of Matt Cutts all blinged up with gold and a mohican is now rather amusing hee hee - “I pity the fool who spams Google sucker”. Actually thinking about it its Matts job to pursue and capture the A-team which would mean that he would have to be Colonel Decker.
Ok now I have stopped laughing and back to me point, what I actually wanted to talk about was what would be the perfect mix of services that would create an extremely effective SEO campaign. The type of core skills required in a team that would create a crack elite SEO commando unit ready to take on the search engines.
SEO is a fast-moving target in a dynamically changing environment so you need an SEO A-team who know all the latest tools, techniques, strategies, and tactics in preparing for the challenge ahead of them. So if you have a website, if no one else can help and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-team of SEO. Cue the gun fire…bang bang bang.
The ideal members for your SEO A-team should be:
Col. John 'Hannibal' Smith – SEO Account Manager
Like any team, it needs a leader and SEO is no exception. You need one person assigned to be in charge of your natural search campaign. This person needs a strong overall knowledge of SEO and your website architecture. There job is too have a good handle on what your SEO goals are, keep focused on your keywords and have full control over the team. This person would potentially be a good firefighter—cool, calm, collected, and an excellent communicator.
Lt. Templeton 'Faceman' Peck - On Page Optimiser
You then need a good on page optimisation specialist, like the character from the A-team they would need to be the overall communicator, in charge of the “face” and over appeal of the website to both users and search engines. They need to be smooth talking, charismatic and charming, making sure they encourage and engage visitors into the required action of the website. There job is to make the actual website content more search friendly and covert any traffic into sale via conversation optimisation.
Capt. 'Howling Mad' Murdock – Link Builder
Link building is an essential part of any SEO campaign which means a link builder is also an integral part of the SEO A-Team. Searching the copious amounts of websites that are out there to find relevant links is without doubt a very laborious process and requires time and dedication. The task can be frustrating and totally boring at times and so like the character Murdock, your link builder will have to be clinically insane.
OK OK they don’t have to be insane but they do need to have the right mentality to be able to handle this type of task and trust me link building takes a unique personality to be able to handle this element of SEO. But whatever their state of mind your link builder needs to be creative, inventive and think constantly outside of the box. They also need to have a mastery of social media and be able to fully immerse themselves into the mindset of the online community. That way they can take full advantage of these traffic generating and reputation management channels.
Sgt. Bosco 'B.A.' Baracus – Web Developer
Clearly you need a website that can be optimised in the first place, so in your SEO A-Team you are doing to need a website developer. Someone who can design and build a website that is search engine friendly. In the case of web development, the SEO aspects should be the driving force behind how the website is developed. It should never be an afterthought. Like B.A himself your website has to be strong, well built and reliable.
Your developer needs to build a strong foundation for the website to make sure you have clean search friendly code and make sure your website loads quickly in all modern browsers. SEO is always evolving and is a moving target which means your website has to evolve constantly as well, incorporating new technologies. Ok agreed the B.A reference is a bit poor but hey “I aint making no Flash website fool”.
So there you have it, the SEO soldiers of fortune ready to take on the cunning Colonel Google in a plot to get to the top of the SERP’s. I have written this to show you that SEO is clearly a team effort comprising of many skill sets that need to come together to create one masterful SEO plan. Keyword research, copywriting, code and server side SEO issues, web development/design, social media marketing and link building, are just some of the expertise your SEO A-team will have to be armed with.
Finding a single person who is skilled in each of these areas is extremely unlikely. My advice is to simply hire an already established SEO A-Team from a capable, experienced SEO agency. When it comes to seriously competing online there is no substitute for the depth of experience, established processes and speed at which a SEO team can deliver results.
By hiring the SEO A-team, you can sit back in your chair, light that fat cigar and say out loud “I love it when a plan comes together”.
